TETON 55L Scout Internal Frame Backpack for Hiking, Camping, Backpacking, Rain Cover Included

After 7 years, here's my thoughts... This is an OUTDOORSMAN'S backpack. This thing is extremely well thought out for OUTDOORS usage. It has served me as a backpacking bag (doing large miles through mountains), but more so as a bush craft type bag. Walking through thick brush, setting up unconventional camps, surviving in the woods at a basecamp for a week or more. The construction is very robust. Thick nylon material, large buckles, large zippers. Let's go over why this bag is excellent for my use case... The pockets and outside straps are perfect. Need to strap some stuff to the outside? The bottom and straps will hold your tent, sleeping bag, outerwear, or collected bundle of firewood with its robust straps and buckles and the heavier fabric will absolutely not tear. I particularly enjoy setting up camp and using these straps to carry back tons of firewood in one trip. That bottom strap is occupied, because you are overloaded with gear and had to throw the tent or sleeping bag down there? Well shove your stuff behind the elastic cordage right above it or on the very top. These elastic cordages typically hold a rain jacket (or similar clothing item) or wet socks and they cinch down so no fear of losing what you got strapped on. These bungee style cord are fantastic and you get two sets of it. Need to keep things handy or generally separate from the everything else shoved inside? You got two decent sized pockets on the outside that are perfect. I use one for fire starting equipment and water purification items, and the other pocket carries extra cordage, a folding saw, and fixed blade knife. My knife/saw pocket did tear from being over stretched and abused constantly after about 4-5 years, but I sewed it back together and have had no issues since. One complaint is the two water bottle pockets are extremely small. They will fit a 1 liter smart water bottle (thinner bottle) but a nalgene is impossible. This is honestly not a huge deal for me. One pocket holds a water bottle and the other my tent poles, which loop into the top elastic loop (which is now extremely stretched out, but still works and is NOT falling apart, but elastic does naturally stretch out over time). I don't use the sleeping bag compartment zipped up so that I can have the entire inside completely open, but this feature exists if you would like. I do however use the zipper on the outside to access this lower part of the bag somewhat regularly and find it extremely useful. The dual pocket lid on top is also incredible. The inner portion holds things like toiletries and the outer portion more readily accessible items like a headlamp or anything else that needs stashing away for quick access. These four main outside pockets are truly perfect for keeping things organized. Otherwise I'd have to go fishing around inside for things like my folding saw or knife or have to pull everything out just to grab my lighter to start my butane camp stove. I am rewriting this review because I recently purchased a more expensive bag (Granite Gear Blaze 60L) to ideally replace this bag due to comfort and having more volume to take more stuff in winter time. Unloading this Teton bag and putting everything into the new fancy bag quickly showed me how usable the teton bag really is especially for outdoors use. The new bag has no outer pockets to hold saw/knife/firestarting items and I see this as a huge detriment for my intended use. The actual material of the bag is far less durable than the Teton and is more like tent rainfly material. It has a lot of outer straps but they're flimsy and mostly to be used as compression straps. Sure the water bottle pockets will hold big bottles, but smart water bottles are superior because when empty they can compress down to smaller size. Yeah it's more comfortable and will more easily carry heavier loads, but I will now be forced to separate my small items into various stuff sacks that I'll have to fish out whenever I need them. Final thoughts... If you are going to be on trail, doing miles of hiking this bag is not ideal, although it is serviceable. It is not the most comfortable or lightweight, but it is extremely durable and will last you a long time. This is a great starter bag (and as I have found, a great end game bag). You really need to evaluate your use case scenario. Overall weight, this thing kinda sucks with over 25-30 pounds for any considerable distance. What type of gear is going inside? Do you have cheaper gear that's heavier and a bit bulky or generally going to carry a good amount of weight? A bag with better straps, hip belt, and back panel may suit you better. Especially, if you're hiking a decent amount. Or do you think you can just tough it out? I have, and it works, but this bag does not stack up to more expensive bags in this area. Do you care about having multiple easy access pockets to keep certain gear separate? Do you need a bag that will withstand you bushwhacking off trail and being thrown down without care? This bag has you covered. It's hard for me to recommend this for a mostly on-trail, backpacking bag. Over time the foam in the shoulder straps has degraded which compounds on the uncomfort of carrying heavy loads. Don't get it twisted this thing will absolutely do the job (see photos), but there are better options. However, if you want a bag that you can take into the woods and survive with for a week or more, this will absolutely not let you down for many years to come. I would buy another one, but I don't need to. This thing just won't quit and I won't let it!

Used it to hike 15 miles across 6 peaks in Acadia, 5 miles one day and 10 miles the next. It was great! 55L was probably too big for this trip but I bought it with intentions to use it on longer backpacking trips later on. I got a 3L water bladder (which I used all of and ran out by the end) and I'd say that's a good size to use with this pack. I had plenty of space for everything I needed (in this case, 3L bladder, .65L filter bladder, lots of snacks, spare trail runners/boots, first aid, head lamp, some tp) and even stored all of my camping gear comfortably, though I didn't bring that on the hike. It's decently comfortable. I'm a skinny guy so I think it's more of a me problem but certain parts did start to dig in after a while. The frame kept all that weight nice and tight, it didn't feel heavy at all. I was actually running a little bit even at the end of my longer trip. Everything was also easy to access without rearranging the whole pack

This a good, sturdy pack, with limitations. pros - Hefty material, solid zippers - Tons of pockets in all the usual locations - Sleeping bag access from below is great, fit my bag easily - Hydration pouch is a plus - Great capacity - Bungees on the exterior for jackets - Brain/top pocket holds a lot - Adjustment for torso length Cons - When a tent or sleeping pad is attached to the exterior straps it gets in the way of attaching the hiking poles to the sides. Attaching poles to the sides is a must for me. - The waist belt and shoulder pads are quite stiff. - It is relatively heavy compared to more expensive/technical backpacks. - It is adjustable, but the build is not specifically designed for women. I wore this around the house fully loaded, and made multiple adjustments to the straps and size. I like the pack (love the color) but ultimately needed something lighter and more comfortable for very long backpacking in tough mountain conditions. I think it would be great for moderate overnight backpacking, especially if you are not trying to optimize every ounce of weight. Men might find this pack perfect. I also think it would be great for backpack traveling. I opted to spring for an Osprey because it fit my needs better.

Took this to the bwca and it held up great even being over stuffed. I was able to fit my tent in the bottom outer pocket, It has some straps toward the bottom the held my sleeping bag, the side pockets held a lot of little gear and is where i stored everything i wanted immediat access to. there are also 2 bottom side strechy side bocket that work well for your water bottle, I brought a 1 quart nalgen bottle thats pretty wide and the pockets streched around it firmly and never tore. The most impressive to me is that there were no tears, i mean i had this thing stuff with plenty of poky objects vrammed in the pockets, scissors, pliers, fish grips and they never broke the fabric. Besides the pockets i meantioned the others in the bag are really only usful depending on how mouch you stuff in the main compartment, the if you fill it the outer front pocket can be pretty tight but even so i was able to cram thing in there and once again - never tore. As a 6'4" man i was concerned about finding a pack that fit my long torso, it came already at the max adjustment which i found perfect. i had to adjust the shoulder and hipstrap lengths which is easy and expected. the upper back and lower back padding was great and all in all I found it as comfortable as a pack can be for someone that doesnt do much pack hiking. I cant speak on the rain cover as i dint end up using it, not sure how it would have fit on my over stuff pack but even without it i never had wet things when a little water got splashed on it during the canoeing parts of my trip. I dont see how the more expensive packs out there could offer anything better. id say i had about 50 pounds in it as i took a lot of lightweight gear. for me 10/10

General info: I am 5'2", 115lbs, 32E bust size. I just bought this pack, and after my initial inspection, it's awesome. I bought the hunter green version, and I like it. The green doesn't seem to be as 'bright' as the picture; a nice, neutral color. Why do I like this pack so much?? $$$ (!) -- I was looking at a slightly larger $200 pack from REI that got worse reviews than this pack did. Great value for the money spent. It feels really solid, and it's comfortable for me. If you are a larger, taller person, you could probably carry a bigger pack, but this size is fantastic for my needs. My dog has his own hiking pack from Ruffwear, so he can carry his own food, toys, and blanket anyway :P Super Adjustable -- there are straps everywhere. You can adjust the shoulder straps to fit your torso length. With a little finagling, I was able to move the chest strap up so it sits comfortably above my chest, removing the issue of being squished in a most awkward fashion. I had no idea when I read the description, but you can even take out the aluminum stays (the actual frame) and *carefully* bend them to fit the contour of your back. Awesome! I wouldn't plan on attempting this alone, and I will probably only do it if I find that I might be able to make it more comfortable. seems pretty good to me so far. There are little straps and and external pockets everywhere! I have some collapsible water bottles with carabiners that go really well on it. I haven't gotten my new sleeping back yet, but I will update as to whether or not it will fit in the designated pouch. If it doesn't, I think I could squish my pillow or a jacket into that pocket and use the 2 long outer straps to attach the sleeping bag. I doubt it could fit a rectangle sleeping bag ever, or a 0F mummy bag, but it may be able to fit a 20F compressed mummy bag. Again, if not, the outer straps most certainly will. As for the bag being good for a carry on, totally! You will have to be careful with how you pack it, but you could do it. It also depends on the airline. They all are so confusing with their different rules, but my old wheeled carry on was wider than the frame on this pack. I will update my review of the pack as I get some practical use in during travelling and camping. I should be going camping a few times in the coming months. Yay (!) California weather (: At some point I'll be flying home for a holiday, so I will be another guinea pig with that. ______________________________ Update #1: My sleeping bag fit in the designated compartment with a little extra room to spare! I could probably shove a book and some socks in there. However, there's no way it would have fit without the compression sack it came with. For reference, my sleeping bag is the "Ledge Sports FeatherLite +20F" mummy bag. I'll be camping in Northern California (winter = 45F at night), so it works for all seasons for me. If you need to use a 0F bag, unless it's a really expensive, specially designed compression bag, it probably won't fit inside this pack's designated compartment. You could fit it in the main compartment, though, and put some other stuff in the bottom section.

This pack has thousands of 5-star reviews for a reason. PROS: It is well-built, has great storage capacity, and looks great. All of the pockets, straps, and shock cord make it easy to hold a lot of gear in a tight, compact way so you don't have to dig through the main compartment for everything. The torso-adjustable straps help hold the weight in a really effective and balanced way. I haul about 30 pounds of gear in it and the weight distribution works very well. Everything in the picture I added fits in or on the pack with decent room to spare for food or more gear. CONS: The sleeping bag compartment is smaller than I would like. I was able to squeeze a 9x16 standard sleeping bag into it, but it took some wrestling to get it in, and was impossible to remove without unzipping the internal shelf to take it out through the top of the pack. I suggest an ultralight sleeping bag that will roll down to 8" or less because it will encroach on the main compartment. Teton Sports has some good ultralight bags that will fit well. The two side pockets will hold standard 3.5" Nalgene bottles, but it's a VERY tight squeeze to get them in and will take some strong effort. Teton should also go back to a zipper for the rain cover instead of velcro. BOTTOM LINE: This is a fantastic pack at a fantastic price and will serve you well in the back country. The cons weren't enough to keep me from giving an overall 5-stars.

I wish there were some places at the very bottom of the bag so I could lash a cord or whatever attachment through (to attach a tent, sleeping pad, etc) and not have it bounce around. I'm sure the loops are useful for hiking axes or some such thing, but I'd prefer to have a way to not have something flip-flopping around back there. In other words, I'd like a little more reinforced bottom with some possibilities for such a thing, even if it added up to half a pound. ON THE OTHER HAND: I love the hunter green version. Great for camouflage but also has a great attached bright yellow rain fly that you can cover your entire pack with. This will help in emergencies, even if you had to cut it off for a flag, whatever. I like the top-loading aspect with the very secure extra-gusseted closure that closes underneath the toggle.. Great feature. What I would have liked, also, is something I have in a Kelty pack I bought once: The top portion of that Kelty bag came loose entirely and you could use it as a shoulder bag or fanny/waist pack. It seems like a waste to not have that feature now as it was so useful. I really like the separate sleeping bag compartment, though there are some gaps where the zipper doesn't go around completely. If you lose some gear, you may have to remove the sleeping bag or whatever and check to see if it didn't sleep down into that compartment. The pros on that feature are that it's easy to get to that without pulling everything out of the pack, or you have a separate compartment for whatever gear you need to get at more easily. Granted you have to take the pack off, but it's a nice option. I'd recommend using a contractor bag or trash bag, etc, to line the bottom of the top section so gear doesn't fall through into the sleeping bag compartment. The fabric looks to be of good lasting quality and nicely water resistent, though I haven't field tested this yet. Though I'm not used to the idea of having to have to take the aluminum slats out, having a friend help adjust them to the curve of my back, I can see that this can be a great feature. My gripe on that is that, though it'll be a great option, the labels give no directions on how to line those things up to your back when you bend them. Not interested in spending a lot of time experimenting with that once the pack's loaded and I find that it's just not the right fit (yet). Overall, I give this 5 stars. The price is wonderful and for a person my size (5'6"), it holds the optimal amount of liters/inches of gear and will be versatile enough to play with. It's a great price, and that is very important to me. Not all of us can afford to go it with something from Marmot or whatever, but that doesn't mean we should walk around in pain or with a leaky, ripping, junky bag. A nice medium!

This is a good size backpack with lots of versatility. I love the lower zip up pocket for the accessibility of my sleeping bag or boots. The side pockets are great for ease of items you will need on the trail. I took this pack on 6 camp-outs and the pack held up well with no signs of wear.

So I’m coming back for a review after having this bag for a year now and I must say it’s probably the best bag I have ever bought. It’s had very tough material that makes it great for bushwhacking, you have no worries about rips or tears. It has an extremely comfortable fit with a variety of length and height adjustments and the most comfortable shoulder straps I’ve ever had on a bag. All zippers are very well built and never get caught up in the material of the bag and all pouches and pockets are ver generously spacious. There are only a few cons, one being it’s a little on the heavy side, weighing a little over 5lb it’s definitely not a ultra light bag. Another being the rain cover is cheaply made, it’s not fully water proof so I wouldn’t depend on it not getting the bag wet in heavy rain. I’ve had water soak through a few times so I would be advised to keep your electronics deep in the bag if you’re going to be in heavy rain (the bag has never fully soaked through even in heavy down pours) Hey a bag coming with a rain cover for 85$ is a steal of a deal so I can look past that. Lastly the interior of the bag is a bit of a tight fit at first, after a few uses the material expands a bit but still it’s not as spacious as it looks on the outside, but the bag also makes up for that in pocket and compartment size. So if you’re looking for a rough and tough bag for deep woods bushwalking or something that you can throw around on rough terrain look no further this is the perfect bag!

This is the second one we have bought in a year. The only reason it hasn't gotten a five star is because I really wish there was a phone or snack pack in the wiste belt. The adjustable back makes the fit awesome. It's fits bulky light items like the Teton adult sleeping bag, sleep mat, as well as clothes' food' hydration bladder and hammock with tarp. Affordable (if you wait for prime days or price drop). I love the adjustable back which can go super short or tall for fullsize adult female body. Means I don't have to invest is more than one child sized camping pack. Even weighing them for my kids for proper packing weight means they can help carry things without discomfort or being overburdened and I didn't have to pay double to get into ultralight packing. Love this so much

I'v got about 25# in it so far. Even a fullsize axe fits nicely close to the body for efficient weight bearing. I think even though it has great storage options, I might still want a belt to carry the "need to carry" things. You can safely overpack if needed; it has some decent ways to "dangle" pots & pans etc. Sleeping roll goes on last and is not utilizing precious space. Good elastic cord for last minute items like a jacket on the outside.
