How thick is the mat? I am considering an Olive brand, which is 2" thick. But this one is on sale.

I don't think it is even 1 inch thick. It is just some fill or batting inside. My son lays this on top of the circle time carpet and doesn't complain. He originally had a 2" thick plastic mat, but it was too short. This is the only thing he uses, but I wouldn't suggest this on top of a hard surface!

You can machine wash and throw it in the dryer. Take the pillow out first. It washes up great.

I'm looking for something for airplane travel, how small does it roll up? Can I carry this in a carry on without sacrificing allot of room??

It's small, but I don't think you're getting it inside your carry-on bag. It would be its own carry-on item that your child (2+) could easily walk on with and shove under the seat in front of him/her. It's very lite and my 3-year old easily carries it.
