It is both a RS232 shield and also a RS485 Shield for Arduino. It can easily convert UART to RS232 or RS485 interface. The shield integrates DB9 connectors (female) that provide connection to various devices with RS232 interface and also provide a RS485 screw terminal interface. It provides the prototyping areas to make full use of extra space on it, which is highly convenient for prototyping.This shield provides 2 mode setting switch. UART/Soft serial settting and RS485/RS232 setting switch. When UART/Soft serial switched to Soft Serial, you'll be able to programming the Arduino controller or communicate with soft serial; When switched UART, you can use the UART port.

Works right out of the box!
Used it on an Arduino R4 WiFi and it works great! Using it to connect to MODBUS RTU enabled devices and I've had no issues. There is a simple sketch on the MFG website that allows you to easily test your connections.

Good Quality, Solid Build.
Great product. Good Quality. Would buy again BUT not in stock.Only 4 stars because I do not like the tiny switch to select UART/Soft Serial. Wish they had jumpers instead.I am using this with a Mega which has four UARTs, not one. Had to cut off pins 2 and 3 and run jumpers to the Mega TX/RX pins.

Excellent Product - Please Note - Pinout is DCE not DTE as typical for RS-232
Works perfect!! PLEASE NOTE: this is configured as a DCE!!!! So to hook to computer you will use a straight thru cable - NOT a NULL cable as typical. So pin #2 of the RS-232 is Transmit and pin #3 is Receive.

Get's the job done. I've been using this consistently for months with an arduino to control a home theater display that's too old for CEC over HDMI, but does have RS232.
