No longer the simple machines they used to be, the modern motorcycle is as complex and diverse as the modern car. In an ever more competitive market, manufacturers are looking for new solutions to old problems – what’s the most efficient transmission? How can emissions and fuel consumption be cut without affecting power? And how can new models be differentiated from one another? This book explains how the modern motorcycle works, in a straightforward style that’s jargon-free and easy to read. It assumes no prior mechanical knowledge, simply an interest in a motorcycle’s workings, and an open mind. The text is accompanied by superb cutaway illustrations from the major motorcycle manufacturers, clearly showing how individual components and systems function. It covers the latest innovations, including traction control and pushbutton gear change, as well as long-established technologies, such as fuel injection and ABS. How Your Motorcycle Works will not transform you into a motorcycle engineer or expert mechanic, but in explaining precisely how everything works, it will increase your understanding, and thus enjoyment, of the machine.

Nice to brush up
A nice easy read during lockdown. Brushing up on my knowledge. Well written, informative and easy to understand. Nice work.

Alright little book.
For the price and size of the book it's an ok purchase. Covers a tiny bit of every subsystem (frame, engine, etc.) at a non technical level. It can be read in a couple of hours with ease, so don't expect it to be a study book. For someone looking for a deeper understanding I suggest the Motorcycle Basics Techbook (Haynes Techbooks).

Easy to use
As described although smaller than expected.

Worthwhile
Better than I expected. A very worthwhile short read. Even those with above average knowledge of bikes, may find something of use here.

Good intro to the basics
Some good descriptions and illustrations. Good read for a novice like myself. It's not going to win any literature prizes anytime soon hence the rating

A window on the modern
This works from the basics and does it very well. As a one-time BSA Bantam, C15 and Starfire rider I find some of the modern technology rather heavy-going. Hopefully this book will break the ice.

Good book for a newby in motorcycle mechanics
Good book for a newbie in motorcycle mechanics. Good content. Well written. Simple text and easy to understand. More illustrative images would be welcome.

This is a fantastic book for gear heads who don't have a mechanical engineering degree.
This book does a great job of explaining very complex concepts, without dumbing it down, but rather using plain english and good illustrations. It helped take away a lot of the voodoo.

Very helpful
I bought this book because I was tired of feeling so stupid whenever someone would stop and talk with my husband and me about our bikes. (We have 2009 Triumph Bonnevilles, which look very similar to the old ones, and people frequently ask us if they are originals.) I mean, I know the "official specs" for my own model, but beyond those numbers, I was pretty clueless as to the inner workings of motorcycles.I like the fact that the author uses a variety of makes, models, and classifications in his explanations and descriptions. There are so many out there, it would be impossible to cover them all, but he sets a good solid framework for understanding the basics. I really appreciated reading it. (I have to admit I did quite a bit of highlighting for future reference!)

Great overview of the basic components
Henshaw does a great job explaining how so many of the nuts and bolts work on your average bike. The pictures are detailed and very helpful, and though you won't be able to build a bike from scratch after reading it, you'll feel a lot more comfortable around mechanics when they jump into the technical jargon. I wish the book went a step further and added sections on troubleshooting typical systems, but even so a great buy for anyone new to motorcycles
