The dialectic method, the awareness of own ignorance, and the pursuit of virtue in human life are some of his most important beliefs and contributions. Plato, the founder of Academy of Athens, has left many writing, mainly in the form of dialogues, addressing a wide variety of subjects including philosophy, logic, ethics, rhetoric, religion, politics and mathematics. His theory of forms, i.e. the belief that the material world is only an image of the real world, has led to the formation of the Platonic School of Thought. Aristotle, one of the most famous student of Plato, joined the Academy of Athens when he became eighteen and stayed there for approximately twenty years. His writings cover an impressively large variety of topics including physics, metaphysics, biology, ethics, poetry, theater and music, rhetoric and politics. Perhaps his most important contribution to the Western thought is his study of formal logic (reasoning). Shortly after Plato’s death, Aristotle moved to Macedonia, where he became tutor of Alexander the Great.
