can this be worn on either side of the body?

No it cannot. This can only be worn on the outside of the body.

can it be worn either side

Wrong!!!! will wear either side. Quick buckle faces backward on left side. not a problem.

has anyone attempted putting a broken down 10.5inch AR15 in it?

A 10.5 upper is still gonna be around 20 inches long This a bag meant to hold magazines and either range gear or active shooter gear. You could fit a Glock 19 in it but even a Glock 17 would be a bit big. Interior dimension is roughly 12Lx6Tx4W

Is there a padded compartment for a pistol.

No padded compartment, but some molle on one side of the main compartment. You could probably riig up a pistol rug or holster to work.
